Keeping the “Off-Season” On Course

Hello to all of our Wachovia Championship eNewsletter recipients! I am Kym Hougham, and I have been proud to have served as the Executive Director of the Wachovia Championship since its inception in 2003. This new feature is a direct result of requests garnered from our post-tournament surveys. Many of you specifically asked for a way to stay more engaged with the tournament throughout the year. We hope this is helpful.

People often ask me what we do the 50-weeks out of the year when we are NOT putting on the actual tournament. Know that our full-time staff is one of the hardest working in the industry. In fact they spend the entire off-season working to make the next year’s tournament even better than the last.

One of our latest efforts includes a re-launch of our website: www.quailhollowchampionship.com. Its purpose is to be a one-stop-shop for everyone desiring to learn more about the Wachovia Championship. New elements are added regularly, so be sure and visit often.

Above and beyond, it’s important for you to know that I personally spend a lot of my time visiting other tournaments across the country to talk to TOUR players and get their input. As a result, we have made some improvements on the 17th green to make it more playable and receptive for tee shots.

Also, I recently spent eight days in Montreal, Canada at the 2007 President’s Cup as a member of the President’s Cup committee. While there I met with many of the top players in the world. They were all very complimentary of the tournament, Quail Hollow and the city of Charlotte. They continue to be amazed by our volunteers and the incredible support and knowledge of our patrons. The sheer numbers that continue come out to the course even early in the week equally impresses them.

We now have five solid years behind us. Just this past year we had Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan playing in the same group on Wednesday’s Pro-Am. Tiger followed that memorable day with a truly spectacular win on Sunday.

Before we put the 2007 event to bed it is with great pride that I tell you that our charity donation for 2007 was in excess of $1,900,000, an increase of 24% from 2006. That means our total donations given to charity since the inception of the tournament now stands at more than $7,500,000. Congratulations to all of you, our loyal patrons.
