Having finally moved past the holiday season and into early 2008, I think we need to take one more look at the 2007 Wachovia Championship before we clearly focus on this year’s tournament.

Not only did we celebrate the 5th anniversary of the tournament, but we certainly did it in style with a magical week. Beginning on Wednesday when 25,000 people came out to watch arguably the two most famous athletes in the world, Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, play a friendly round of golf. Only in the Carolinas would you hear someone say, “Hey, who is the guy standing next to Michael Jordan?” The Charlotte Mecklenburg School system must have thought there was a flu epidemic considering all the kids that missed school to watch these two legends play. It might be something that will never be seen again, so who could blame them?

The rest of the week produced some of the most exciting golf in the history of the event culminating with Tiger’s two stroke victory over Steve Stricker on a beautiful Sunday afternoon while setting a new tournament scoring record at 13 under par.

As an Executive Director of a PGA TOUR event, you feel fortunate when Tiger plays in your event; when he wins it you feel blessed. This tournament will forever be associated with Tiger and his win puts the event into a higher level of prestige and respectability.

I will be traveling to other events in the upcoming months talking to the players and their agents and to hand out information concerning this year’s tournament. By the end of March, I will have a good feel about where the strength of our field will be. Having spent 8 days in Montreal last fall with the United States Presidents Cup team, I will tell you that from the comments made to me we can expect a field just as strong as 2007.

Did you know……there are 9 professional men’s golf TOURS in the world that sanction 287 tournaments. Only 9 of those tournaments had all of the top 10 players in the World Golf Rankings play in them. The four majors, two World Golf Championships, the PLAYERS, the TOUR Championship and…..the Wachovia Championship. That puts us in the top 3% of all tournaments held worldwide.

As we focus on 2008 we will continue to evaluate and explore how we can make our event an even better experience for everyone who attends. We do this by using the surveys and self evaluations of the tournament staff, patrons, sponsors and the ambassadors. We are forever looking at ways to improve our product across the board because we owe it to Wachovia, our sponsors, patrons, Quail Hollow members, ambassadors and certainly the City of Charlotte to put on a first class, world renowned event.

The quality and continued improvement of this event is our single focus and we will never lose sight of that goal.
