The Volunteer Brief

Happy New Year to all of our past, present and future volunteers! Our volunteer process is successfully underway for the 2008 Wachovia Championship. The process continues with the goal of filling more than 2,600 volunteer spots for this year’s Championship.

Tournament Volunteer Coordinator, Paula Burnett, and staff started filling positions in November with past volunteers that were interested in helping out again this year. Some individuals will be spending their sixth straight year with the Championship, having volunteered every year of the tournament’s existence. North and South Carolinian’s make up a majority of the volunteers but there are dozens of people that come in from all over the country for this tournament.

One veteran golf tournament volunteer states “I really enjoy helping at golf tournaments I have been doing it for 15 years now and the way I am treated by the Wachovia personnel goes a long way in my desire to keep coming back year after year. The Committee Chair and team run a very efficient group and I feel needed and that I’m making a positive contribution. In addition, the fact that the Wachovia has very quickly gone from a “new tournament to a real important PGA event also adds to my desire to come back year after year.”

Once the volunteer selection process ends, each individual will be divided up into one of the 24 different committees. Committee Chairs and Hole Captains take on leadership roles of their team. They will communicate for months leading up to the tournament to ensure that their team is fully prepared to carry out their volunteer duties.

Routinely in the the months of February-April, the number of Volunteers tends to change due to scheduling conflicts. Once this happens, the tournament will start to fill in with volunteers from the current wait list.
