2008 Wachovia Championship Recap

Anthony Kim’s weekend at the Wachovia Championship not only brought the 22-year-old his first victory on the PGA TOUR but resulted in one of the strongest performances in tournament history.

Kim shot a third-round 6-under-par 66 to build a four-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s final round at Quail Hollow Club. As he had in his three previous rounds, he started the day with a birdie on the first hole and polished off his first PGA TOUR victory with a 3-under 69 to finish at 16-under 272, establishing a tournament record by three shots and becoming the first champion to win by more than two strokes at Quail Hollow Club.

“I am a little bit numb right now, but that walk up 18 was the best feeling in my entire life,” Kim said after becoming the 13th different player since 1970 to win on the PGA TOUR before turning 23. “I had chills going up and down my spine. I want to recreate that as many times as possible now, so I’m going to really work hard.”

Kim birdied the par-4 first hole each day during the week and in turn played the front nine in 15-under-par versus his 1-under performance on the back-nine at Quail Hollow Club. He recorded 22 birdies—the most by any previous champion-- and one eagle during the week
