The Volunteer Brief

Volunteers have been the backbone of many organizations in America throughout history. Ours are no different. Each year, more than 2,600 individuals come together to make up a team of volunteers who help bring the tournament to life.

The process starts in October, when the 2000+ volunteers are encouraged to reapply for the 2009 tournament. Once the returning volunteer pool is gathered, the application process is opened to volunteers who had to decline positions in 2008 and to 2007 volunteers who were unable to participate last year. Once previous volunteers are given the opportunity to participate, the tournament staff, led by Volunteer Coordinator Paula Burnett, defers to the waiting list. You may be surprised to know that the waiting list to be a volunteer for the event is already 1,200 people long!

The selection process begins with initial contacts in October through January prior to the tournament. Once selected, volunteers are divided into 24 different committees. Some 120 volunteers take on leadership roles as Committee Chairs or Hole Captains. They commit 100-200 individual hours to the tournament each year!

Only about 400-500 new volunteers are included each year, which makes the learning curve much easier for the whole group. Wachovia does its part in not only sponsoring the Championship but in providing a fourth of the volunteer base with Wachovia employees, some coming from across the country.

Our volunteers are the true “behind the scenes” players for the Wachovia Championship.

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please take a look at our website: quailhollowchampionship.com and enroll on the waiting list.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered with us in the past, and we look forward to working with all of our new volunteers in the future!
