Notes about the 2009 Quail Hollow Championship

No competitor has recorded four rounds in the 60s in the same tournament in seven years of the Quail Hollow Championship. Arron Oberholser nearly became the first in 2007 when he shot 69 in the first three rounds before recording a 74 on Sunday.

With his victory, Sean O’Hair became the first current U.S. native player on the PGA TOUR under the age of 30 with three wins. He is also one of seven U.S. natives under the age of 30 with multiple PGA TOUR victories.

Phil Mickelson has posted five top-12 finishes in six starts at the Quail Hollow Championship. However, the last three holes have historically given the left-hander trouble. In 24 rounds, Mickelson is a combined 57-under-par on Quail Hollow’s first 15 holes, but 23-over-par on the final three.

In 2009, Bubba Watson led the field in driving distance with an average drive of 331.6 yards.

2008 champion Anthony Kim started the 2009 tournament in familiar form. Kim birdied the first hole at Quail Hollow Club all four rounds during his victorious year. This year he birdied the first hole to start the tournament on Thursday and therefore recorded his fifth consecutive birdie on the opening hole. Kim is 7-under-par in nine rounds on the par-four, 1st.

When Vijay Singh missed the 36-hole cut at this year’s Quail Hollow Championship, it marked the end of a streak. Prior to this year, he was the only competitor who had made the cut each year since the tournament began in 2003.

Four of the seven champions of the Quail Hollow Championship have come-from-behind on Sunday to win the title. Joey Sindelar, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and Sean O’Hair all trailed heading into the final round.
