A Championship of Charity

Champions for Education, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Charlotte, NC, was founded in April of 2002. The corporation’s purpose is to accomplish charitable acts and since its 7 year history has donated $11 million to various charities. A majority of those funds have gone to Teach For America, the tournament’s primary charity since 2003.

As a result of the 2009 Quail Hollow Championship, $800,000 was given to Teach For America in Charlotte, $150,000 was donated to Levine Children’s Hospital and $100,000 was distributed to The First Tee of Charlotte. A total of $1.6 million was distributed in the local market. In the past seven years, Champions for Education has contributed upwards of $11 million and assisted in providing awareness for various organizations

“We’re so thankful for the long-standing support of Champions for Education as we channel the talent and commitment of our nation’s future leaders in the movement to end educational inequity,” said Tim Hurley, executive director of Teach For America in Charlotte. “Their support ensures that we can continue our work to dramatically improve achievement levels and life prospects for students in our most economically disadvantaged communities.”

In order to accomplish these charitable goals, Champions for Education manages and operates the Quail Hollow Championship, a PGA TOUR event, conducted each spring at the Quail Hollow Club. The Quail Hollow Championship has become one of the largest sporting events in the region and has attracted all of golf’s top ranked players. The list of champions includes David Toms, Joey Sindelar, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim and Sean O’Hair.

“Part of the structure of a PGA TOUR event is a host organization and we felt Champions for Education would be the perfect fit as we look to improve opportunities for children,” says Mac Everett, Chairman of Champions for Education. “As the host organization for the Quail Hollow Championship, Champions for Education is proud of the progress we have made so far. However, we are always looking to improve on that mission.”
