Kym’s Behind the Scenes

People often ask me about the relationship between the tournament staff and the PGA TOUR, and the roles and responsibilities of each, that lead to a seamless and cohesive effort that produces a world class golf tournament. We have a great relationship with the TOUR and both groups put in a lot of hours preparing for the tournament.

Think of it this way, the tournament is responsible for every item outside the gallery ropes. The TOUR is responsible for everything that happens inside the gallery ropes from Thursday through Sunday, as well as everything that has a direct affect on the players, their families and their caddies.

An "Advance Official," in our case, Steve Rintoul, is assigned to the tournament and arrives at the tournament site on the Monday prior to tournament week. He works closely with the tournament staff to help finalize the plans and procedures that we have been working on for many months.

We also are assigned a "Tournament Director," Mark Russell, by the TOUR that is responsible for the oversight of the tournament during the actual week of the event. One of his many responsibilities is the competitive playing conditions of the golf course and that includes the speed and firmness of the greens, the height of the rough, the placement of the holes on the greens and the tee markers. Along with the rest of the rules committee, he oversees marking the golf course hazards and out of bounds areas so that they comply with the rules of golf. Russell, who is a North Carolina native, is also responsible for deciding tee times from Thursday through Sunday and proofing the groupings and pairings to make sure the correct players are teeing off at the proper time.

In addition to the Rules Committee, the TOUR also sends staff who help our walking scorers and Shotlink operators gather statistics and scores throughout the competition. Several Media Officials are also on hand to help conduct player interviews and maintain a proper working environment for all of the media who cover us during tournament week.

Your tournament staff and the PGA TOUR work hand in hand to try to make your experience an exceptional one. Without the cooperation of both parties the Quail Hollow Championship could not function on such a high level. We think our sponsors and patrons deserve nothing less.
