Behind the scenes with Executive Director, Kym Hougham

It is that time of year again when the official PGA TOUR season comes to a close. It is always fun to reflect and see what some of the players accomplished during the season since they visited us at the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

2011 Champion Lucas Glover and Executive Director, Kym Hougham

Our 2011 champion Lucas Glover, who has now finished among the top 10 four times in eight starts at Quail Hollow Club, did make some noise at the British Open. Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, had only three bogeys in the first two rounds and shared the lead with eventual champion Darren Clarke heading into the weekend.

Two more of our champions—David Toms and Vijay Singh-- made it to the final week of the PGA TOUR Playoffs at THE TOUR Championship. This year’s runner-up Jonathan Byrd also made the field of 30 in Atlanta.

2005 Champion Vijay Singh

Our inaugural champion, David Toms had an outstanding year. After finishing in the top 25 here, he lost in a playoff the following week and then won the Crowne Plaza Invitational a week later. He finished tied for fourth at the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, site of his PGA Championship win 10 years earlier. Toms also received the prestigious Payne Stewart Award for his many unselfish acts off the golf course and his sportsmanship on the golf course.

Two of our young champions also continued to win. Rory McIlroy had an impressive victory at the U.S. Open at Congressional in June. He became our sixth champion, who has also won a major and our first champion to win here first and then go on to capture his first major championship title. About a month later, Sean O’Hair picked up his fourth career victory when he won the RBC Canadian Open.

2010 Champion Rory Ilroy

The year also was kind to several players who not only compete in the Wells Fargo Championship but call Charlotte home.

It was great to see Charlotte-born Bill Haas win the FedExCup title after winning THE TOUR Championship last month. The Haas family has been a huge supporter of our tournament from the beginning. Another member of our Charlotte family is Webb Simpson, who has been the hottest player in golf the past few months. He won twice in five starts at the end of August and into September. Also, Johnson Wagner won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in February and Matthew Goggin has won twice on the Nationwide Tour.

The fall golf schedule certainly brings potential for more of our champions and local players to shine. But once again it has been an outstanding year for our Wells Fargo Championship family!
