Sponsor A Teacher Program

For the second year, Champions for Education, the charitable arm of the Wells Fargo Championship is sponsoring a teacher and a class through Teach For America Charlotte’s “Sponsor A Teacher” program. This year, the teacher is Charlie Williams, IV, who is teaching 6th grade Social Studies at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School in Charlotte. In addition to other support, the tournament donated two ipads for himself and his class. Charlie is from Norfolk, VA, graduated from Morehouse College and is also working on his Masters of Arts in Teaching at UNC-Charlotte.

What is the best question you have ever received from one of your students?

WILLIAMS, IV: “I can't remember an exact quote but I know it has to deal with the differences between Islam and Christianity in the first portion of our Religion unit.”

What teacher inspired you to be a teacher and why?

WILLIAMS, IV: “My mother, primarily. She's been an educator for 23 years. In addition to her my godmother, aunts and lots of members in my church family are all in education.”

What were some of your hobbies, sports growing up?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Playing basketball and football, video games and playing the baritone.”

When you are not working, what do you like to do during your personal time?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Watch sports, read about politics and read sports articles.”

What are some of your favorite books?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Catcher in the Rye, The Things They Carried and The Awakening.”

What are some of your favorite movies?

WILLIAMS, IV: ‘Ocean's Eleven’

What songs are on your IPOD?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Everything from The Beatles to Jay-Z”.

What is the best trip you have ever taken?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Going to Las Vegas for Spring Break in March 2012.”

Where are your favorite places to eat in Charlotte?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Jack Beagle's, Three Amigos, Growler's and Whiskey Warehouse.”

One of your goals is to receive your masters degree in teaching. Once you have earned that, what subject would you like to pursue for a doctorate?

WILLIAMS, IV: “Preferably something in Curriculum Instruction. I would love to make teachers better at their craft.”
