Behind The Scenes
with Executive Director, Kym Hougham

I attended the first tournament of the 2014-2015 season with a visit to the Frys.com Open during the second week in October and enjoyed seeing a good number of players, caddies and other tournament directors. It is always exciting to get a new season underway and discuss the possibilities that a new year brings.

The feeling is this could be an interesting year on the PGA TOUR. What will Rory McIlroy do as a follow-up to another outstanding season? Our 2010 champion has certainly performed admirably these past few months. Also, what will Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson do? Will we see another Jimmy Walker type performance early on and another Billy Horschel hot streak to end the year? And, there are some outstanding rookies and young players who have earned status on the PGA TOUR. Who will be the next Jordan Spieth or Raleigh's Chesson Hadley, both Rookies of the Year the past two seasons?

This month also marks the beginning of the second year of the TOUR's wraparound season which we all experienced for the first time last year. It seems many of the players realized that the next month or so is important to get some momentum early for the FedEx Cup points. Also, the chance for an early victory takes a lot of pressure off as they look ahead into the 2015 portion of the schedule. It certainly worked for Walker, who had three victories early and a very consistent season throughout.

When speaking with the players and caddies it is continually great to hear the compliments directed to ALL of us who are a part of the Wells Fargo Championship. And, it is truly nice to be able to cheer them on and wish them good luck for a new season. I always enjoy watching the progress of players from the beginning of the season, leading up to our tournament week and as the TOUR moves on from Charlotte. I am also a big fan of golf, another one of the reasons I feel fortunate to have this job.

Several of our past champions were in the field in California and I was able to speak to a few of them—Vijay Singh, Sean O'Hair, Lucas Glover and Derek Ernst. Our champions and other players who have competed in our tournament continue to be excellent ambassadors for our event as they share their Charlotte experience with others during their travels.

I encourage everybody to watch some golf this month. I think it could be an interesting start to the new season. And do not forget to renew your tickets! You DO NOT want to miss the Wells Fargo Championship in May.
