Behind the Scenes with Executive Director, Kym Hougham
It appears we have come out of the cold winter in recent weeks and we are entering a very energetic time period as we start the final stretch of preparation for the Wells Fargo Championship. Remember, we are two weeks later this year and our week will be May 11-17. After this year, we will return to our traditional date—the first full weekend of May.
Recently I visited the Honda Classic down in Florida to spend time with other tournament directors, share ideas, talk to players and saw how that tournament manages its week on the PGA TOUR schedule. It is always good to see first-hand how other events look and feel. It was also good to see some of the players who are making plans to come to Charlotte in May.
In this part of the country, golf seems to get a real kick-start this time of year and the enthusiasm for the game grows. Hopefully, you have seen some of our digital, print and electronic ads we started running throughout the area and regionally. You may notice the tone and message are somewhat different than the past. One of our goals this year is to reach a broader audience in the area and share the overall experience of a great PGA TOUR event with them.
To that point, there will be a few, new interactive social areas on the golf course. We recognize that many fans come to Quail Hollow Club to watch the world’s best golfers compete and showcase their skills throughout the week. However, we have also seen a trend that many of you come to the golf course to have fun outside, share time with friends and family and enjoy the beautiful grounds that Quail Hollow Club provides once a year each spring.
Golf tournaments can be unique in this way. A great competition is going on inside the ropes and yet there is a wonderful social atmosphere on the exterior. So, for all of you younger sports fans who enjoy that part of an outdoor event here in Charlotte, we hope you will get out to the tournament in May and find that golf is actually pretty cool. You can Tweet, Instagram and Facebook all you want!
In response to a growing trend, we are going to try something new this year and allow fans to hire commercial vehicles, such as UBER, to bring them to the tournament. This will not be a personal drop-off spot. Only registered or licensed vehicles will be allowed to use this drop-off area on Gleneagles, across the street from the entrance to Quail Hollow Club. Please check our website for more detailed information.
This time last year, we were talking about changes to the golf course. Well, there have been no major changes and we all anticipate that the rolling fairways and challenging greens that have made Quail Hollow so popular with the TOUR pros will be as beautiful as ever this spring. As always thanks for your support, dust off those clubs and get excited for the Wells Fargo Championship—YOUR PGA TOUR event.
