During the 2017 PGA TOUR schedule, Francesco Molinari established two new course records with direct ties to our event. The first was a 6-under-par 66 during the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC. His second was at Quail Hollow Club when he shot a 7-under-par 64 in the second round to establish the PGA Championship’s 18-hole record at the Charlotte, NC club.
Dustin Johnson won the Sentry Tournament of Champions event earlier this month on the strength of 23 birdie putts, averaging only 4’10” which is the shortest average distance of birdie putts made (20+) in nine years. Prior to this, Sean O’Hair made 21 birdie putts averaging only 5’3” when he won the 2009 Wells Fargo Championship.
Two past champions of the Wells Fargo Championship competed in the Sentry Tournament of Champions, which kicked off the new PGA TOUR calendar year. 2017 champion Brian Harman finished 3rd and 2012 champion Ricky Fowler was tied for fourth.
There were 31 players who recorded holes-in-one during the 2017 calendar year. One of those was Joost Luiten, who aced the new, par-three 4th hole at Quail Hollow Club during the first round of the PGA Championship.
Since winning the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship, Rickie Fowler has finished in the top ten 47 times, including three more victories, seven runner-up finishes and six third-place finishes.
